Rotating Shadowband Radiometer Instrumentation

At Ascension Technology, a company Dr. Kern founded in 1987, he developed an inexpensive, easy to operate instrument for monitoring solar energy resources. This instrument has been deployed worldwide to measure the two standard components of the solar resource, direct normal and diffuse horizontal irradiance. This product line was sold with Ascension Technology to Schott Solar. In June 2005, Irradiance acquired rights to the Rotating Shadowband Radiometer and began manufacturing and selling a second generation instrument. The RSR-2 is the single most cost effective means to quantify the solar global, direct and diffuse irradiance for solar photovoltaic and concentrating solar power system simulation and performance monitoring.
